Azalea 'Coral Bells' Pink Flowering Kurume Azalea
‘Coral Bells’ is a compact, evergreen azalea that bursts into life with masses of showy coral-pink flowers in spring, even on young plants. Growing at a moderate pace, it matures to about 0.6–1.8 m tall and 0.6–0.9 m wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub with year-round appeal. In cooler months, the foliage often develops attractive red tones, adding seasonal interest.
This versatile plant works beautifully in shrub borders, woodland gardens, or patio containers, and is also an excellent choice for bonsai starter material thanks to its small leaves, compact growth, and striking flower display. It’s a pollinator favourite, drawing bees to the garden during its abundant spring bloom.
Care Information
Climate Adaptability: Thrives in South Africa’s temperate climates. Protect from drought, heavy soils, or waterlogged conditions.
Sun Exposure: Best grown in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but well-draining. Avoid overwatering as the plant is prone to Phytophthora root rot.
Soil Type: Prefers acidic, humus-rich soil with good drainage. Avoid heavy clay or alkaline soils. Enrich with organic matter if needed.
Pruning & Maintenance: Remove spent flowers after blooming to encourage healthy growth. Light pruning maintains its compact shape.
Fertilisation: Apply an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring. Avoid excessive feeding.
