The Acer shirasawanum 'Yasemin' is a hybrid cultivar with a unique deep maroon colour that distinguishes it from other shirasawanum types. It begins its spring display with large, deeply divided leaves that set it apart from its relatives. Discovered by Cor van Gelderen of Esveld Nursery in Holland, and named after his daughter, Mirte Yasemin, this cultivar features the characteristic broad, spreading crown of Acer shirasawanum.

Known for its remarkable cold tolerance, 'Yasemin' is an excellent choice for colder climates that still want vibrant red foliage. Its heat tolerance makes it equally suitable for warmer climates. In the autumn, 'Yasemin' turns a bright, striking crimson red, offering a spectacular autumn display.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: 'Yasemin' is exceptionally adaptable, thriving in both cold and hot climates. It exhibits the cold tolerance typical of Acer shirasawanum, making it perfect for cooler regions. It also performs well in hotter conditions, where its heat tolerance ensures it maintains its vibrant foliage and overall health.

Sun Exposure: This cultivar does best in partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler regions. In hotter climates, it is best planted in a location that receives some afternoon shade to protect the leaves from potential scorch and preserve its deep colours.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but ensure it is well-draining. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. During dry spells, increase watering to maintain even moisture levels in the soil. 'Yasemin' is quite resilient to drought once established, but consistent watering will ensure it thrives.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Heavy, clayey soils should be amended with organic material to improve drainage. Well-drained soil is essential for the best root health and the overall vitality of the plant.

Pruning: 'Yasemin' requires minimal pruning. Trim any dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring to maintain its rounded shape and promote healthy growth. Light pruning after the fall season can help maintain its form and encourage new growth.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser designed for Japanese Maples in early spring. This will support robust growth and vibrant foliage throughout the growing season, ensuring the tree reaches its full potential.

Acer Shirasawanum 'Yasemin'

I'm very pleased with the Acer Shirasawanum 'Yasemin' that I ordered from Japanese Maples SA. It was packaged with great care, and it arrived in good shape. Since I ordered it in June, I was not expecting any leaves on it, but there were still a few. These and the beautiful outline of the tree hint at the beauty that can be expected this coming spring. This may yet be my best buy at Japanese Maples South Africa. This one exceeded all my expectations. I can't wait for spring. Thank you Japanese Maples South Africa!
