Acer palmatum 'Ikandi' Japanese Maple

The Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’, pronounced “Eye Candy”, is an extraordinary variegated Japanese Maple introduced by renowned maple breeder Talon Buchholz. True to its name, this highly collectible cultivar offers an exceptional display of pink, cream, white, and green foliage that evolves dramatically throughout the growing season.

In early spring, ‘Ikandi’ can emerge with leaves that are almost entirely bright pink, making it one of the most striking pink reticulated Japanese Maples available. As the leaves mature, the intense pink gradually softens towards creamy white while contrasting green veins and reticulation begin to develop across the foliage.

During summer, the tree develops a beautiful combination of green and creamy-white variegation, while vigorous new growth may emerge predominantly green. This is a natural characteristic of ‘Ikandi’ and should not automatically be mistaken for reversion. As the tree matures, its distinctive variegation generally becomes stronger and more pronounced.

In autumn, ‘Ikandi’ completes its seasonal transformation with glowing shades of gold, orange, and fiery red, providing another spectacular colour display before the leaves fall.

Climate Adaptability: Thrives in temperate climates and performs well in moderate South African conditions. Protect from excessive heat, dry winds, and prolonged exposure to intense summer conditions.

Sun Exposure: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade or bright filtered light. Protection from harsh afternoon sun helps maintain foliage quality, while gentle morning light can encourage attractive colour development.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, particularly during warm weather and while the tree is establishing. Avoid allowing the root zone to dry out completely or remain waterlogged.

Soil Type: Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. A cool, healthy root zone will support steady growth and good foliage development.

Pruning: Requires minimal pruning. Light structural shaping can be carried out during winter dormancy if required. Avoid excessive pruning, as allowing the tree to mature naturally can help its characteristic variegation develop.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertilisation, as overly vigorous growth may produce greener foliage and reduce the intensity of the variegation.

Mature Size: Upright, vase-shaped form reaching approximately 3 metres high and 1.5 metres wide within 10 years, with the tree continuing to broaden and develop with maturity.
