Acer palmatum 'Aizumi nishiki' Rare Pink Variegated Japanese Maple

The Acer palmatum ‘Aizumi nishiki’ is a rare and exceptionally colourful variegated Japanese Maple, prized for its dramatic combination of bright green, creamy-white, and vivid pink foliage. With some of the strongest variegation found among upright Japanese Maples, this distinctive cultivar makes an immediate statement in any collection.

In spring, ‘Aizumi nishiki’ emerges with fresh green leaves generously splashed and streaked with bright pink and creamy-white variegation. The markings can vary considerably from leaf to leaf, giving the canopy a beautifully irregular, hand-painted appearance.

Adding further interest, the young stems often display striking scarlet to fiery red streaking, creating additional colour even when viewed closely or during the dormant season.

As the foliage matures through summer, the pink tones may soften while the green and creamy-white variegation remains prominent. Because of its heavy variegation, ‘Aizumi nishiki’ is naturally slower growing than many standard Japanese Maples, gradually developing into a compact, shrub-like specimen.

Climate Adaptability: Thrives in temperate climates and performs well in moderate South African conditions. Protect from extreme summer heat, strong drying winds and prolonged exposure to harsh conditions.

Sun Exposure: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade or bright filtered light. Protection from intense afternoon sun is particularly important for maintaining the delicate pink and creamy-white variegation and reducing the risk of leaf scorch.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, especially during warmer weather and while the plant is establishing. Avoid allowing the root zone to dry out completely or remain waterlogged.
