The Acer palmatum ‘Hana matoi’ is one of the most exciting laceleaf cultivars to emerge from Japan in recent years. Introduced by Yutaka Tanaka of Tsukasa Nursery, this exceptional variety is celebrated for its dramatic colour shifts and finely dissected foliage.

In early spring, ‘Hana matoi’ bursts to life in brilliant red adorned with striking hot pink variegation. As the season progresses, the red tones deepen beautifully in full sun. In more shaded positions, the foliage softens and may develop a stunning blend of green with white and pink variegation, creating an ever-changing display. No matter the light conditions, this cultivar consistently delivers breathtaking seasonal interest.

In autumn, the red and pink hues intensify once again, providing a vivid and unforgettable finale. Its graceful cascading umbrella form adds softness and movement to the landscape, making it an exceptional focal point in any garden.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: Thrives in temperate climates and performs well in most South African regions with moderate conditions. Protect from extreme heat and strong winds to preserve its delicate foliage.

Sun Exposure: Performs well in both sun and partial shade. For the most intense red tones, provide morning sun with protection from harsh afternoon heat. In shadier areas, enjoy softer variegated colour combinations.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained. Avoid waterlogging, as laceleaf varieties prefer steady moisture without saturated roots.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil rich in organic matter to support healthy root development and vibrant foliage.

Pruning: Requires minimal pruning. Light shaping can be done in winter while dormant to maintain its elegant cascading umbrella form.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and optimal seasonal colour.

Mature Size: Forms a cascading umbrella shape reaching approximately 1.8 metres in height over time.
