Acer palmatum 'Seiun kaku' Rare Dwarf Japanese Maple
Please note, this is a pre-order item and will begin shipping from the week of 12th May.
The Acer palmatum 'Seiun Kaku' is a rare, grafted dwarf cultivar known for its tightly layering habit, where the leaves appear like shingles on a roof. This unique feature gives it a more vigorous form, resembling a larger 'Mikawa Yatsubusa'.
In spring, the foliage emerges as a vibrant chartreuse green, transitioning to a darker green during the summer months. Come autumn, the leaves transform into a stunning, fiery red, adding brilliant colour to the landscape. With its compact, upright form and striking seasonal changes, 'Seiun Kaku' is perfect for smaller gardens, bonsai, or as a beautiful accent tree in larger landscapes.
Care Information:
Climate Adaptability: 'Seiun Kaku' thrives in temperate climates and is moderately cold-hardy, withstanding some frost. It should be protected from extreme cold in harsher winter climates. Its small size makes it a great option for milder areas and smaller garden spaces.
Sun Exposure: This cultivar can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. In hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade is ideal to preserve the leaf colour and prevent scorching. In cooler regions, full sun will help the leaves develop their vibrant hues.
Watering: Ensure the soil is consistently moist but well-drained. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so proper drainage is essential. During dry spells, increase watering to maintain moisture levels, but avoid waterlogging.
Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. If your soil is heavy or clayey, amend it with organic material to improve drainage. Well-drained soil is vital for this cultivar's overall health.
Pruning: 'Seiun Kaku' requires minimal pruning. Trim back any dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring to maintain its compact, upright shape. Light pruning after autumn will help preserve its form and promote healthy new growth.
Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser designed for Japanese Maples in early spring. This will encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage throughout the growing season.
