The Acer palmatum 'Phoenix' is a striking cultivar known for its dramatic, upright growth habit and vibrant, fiery foliage. In spring, its leaves emerge as a brilliant crimson-red, transitioning to deep red and purple hues throughout the summer.

As autumn arrives, the foliage intensifies into rich red and orange tones, creating a stunning display of colour. With its upright, bushy form and vivid colour changes, 'Phoenix' is ideal for adding height and seasonal beauty to gardens, particularly as a focal point or specimen tree.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: 'Phoenix' thrives in temperate climates and performs best in moderate conditions. It can tolerate some cold but is sensitive to extreme heat and humidity. Protect it from harsh winds and intense midday sun to maintain its vibrant colour and overall health.

Sun Exposure: This cultivar prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, the brightest colours and best form are achieved with full sun exposure. However, in very hot climates, some afternoon shade may help protect the leaves from scorching.

Watering: Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but well-drained. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot. During dry spells, water deeply to maintain consistent moisture levels. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as drought stress can damage the plant.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil. If your soil is heavy or clay-based, amend it with organic matter to improve drainage and support healthy root growth. Proper drainage is essential for the vitality of this cultivar.

Pruning: 'Phoenix' requires minimal pruning. Trim back any dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring. Regular light pruning to shape the tree and remove any unwanted growth can help maintain its upright form.
