Juniperus conferta ‘Shore Juniper’ is a rugged yet elegant evergreen conifer prized for its soft blue-green foliage, low spreading habit, and exceptional hardiness. Originally valued for coastal planting due to its salt and wind tolerance, Shore Juniper has become a favourite among collectors and landscapers for its textured appearance and versatility in the garden.

Its dense trailing growth forms a flowing carpet of fine needle-like foliage that develops beautiful silvery-blue tones throughout the cooler months. Unlike many harsher-looking junipers, Shore Juniper has a softer, more refined texture that works beautifully in modern landscapes, rock gardens, cascading containers, and bonsai cultivation.

This cultivar thrives when allowed to spread naturally, creating a layered, windswept effect that pairs exceptionally well with Japanese Maples, ornamental grasses, pines, and stone features. Its evergreen structure provides year-round interest and strong contrast against seasonal planting.

A reliable, low-maintenance conifer that brings movement, texture, and a distinctly Japanese garden feel to any space.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: Extremely hardy and adaptable across most South African climates. Tolerates heat, wind, coastal conditions, and moderate frost once established.

Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun for the best foliage colour, density, and compact growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Shore Juniper is relatively drought tolerant and prefers slightly drier conditions between watering.

Soil Type: Thrives in well-draining soil, prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Avoid overly wet or waterlogged conditions, especially during colder months.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light trimming can be done to shape or encourage denser growth.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser during spring for healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour.

Mature SizeApproximately 30–50 cm high and 1.5–2.5 metres wide over time depending on growing conditions.
