The Acer palmatum ‘Okushimo’ is a distinctive and unusual upright green Japanese Maple admired for its unique curled foliage and elegant vase-shaped form. The light green leaves feature margins that curl upward, creating a textured and architectural look unlike most other cultivars.

The name ‘Okushimo’ translates to “salt and pepper”, referencing the refined and intricate nature of its foliage. This historic Japanese cultivar is often underutilised, yet it offers exceptional landscape value. In autumn, the foliage transforms into beautiful shades ranging from bright yellow to deep orange, adding vibrant seasonal interest.

With its naturally narrow, upright growth habit, ‘Okushimo’ forms a graceful vase shape that remains elegant even at maturity. It works beautifully as a focal point specimen or when planted alongside contrasting Japanese Maple varieties.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: A hardy and vigorous cultivar suited to temperate climates and most South African regions with moderate conditions.

Sun Exposure: Performs well in both sun and partial shade. While tolerant of sun, protection from extreme afternoon heat will help maintain optimal foliage quality.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained. Avoid prolonged waterlogging to ensure healthy root development.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter for sustained healthy growth.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light structural pruning during winter dormancy will maintain its elegant vase-shaped form.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous seasonal growth.

Mature Size: Upright narrow form reaching approximately 4.5–6 metres in height and 3–4.5 metres in width over time.
