The Acer palmatum ‘Kamagata’ is a drought-hardy upright dwarf Japanese Maple valued for its resilience and distinctive foliage habit. Originally named and propagated by J.D. Vertrees, this cultivar carries both heritage and character, making it a refined addition to any garden.

‘Kamagata’ is admired for its delicately hanging leaves, which create a soft, drooping effect that adds movement and elegance to its compact upright form. Its manageable size and adaptability make it especially suitable for smaller gardens, rock garden settings, or areas with slightly drier conditions once established.

In autumn, the foliage transforms into a rich ruby red, delivering a vibrant seasonal display that contrasts beautifully against its structured growth habit.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: A hardy and adaptable cultivar suited to temperate climates and most South African regions. Once established, it shows good tolerance to drier conditions.

Sun Exposure: Performs well in morning sun with afternoon shade. Can tolerate more sun than many varieties, but protection from extreme heat is recommended.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once mature, it can tolerate slightly drier conditions, though well-drained soil remains essential.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter for optimal root health.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light shaping during winter dormancy will maintain its upright dwarf form.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and strong autumn colour.

Mature Size: Upright dwarf reaching approximately 1.8–2.7 metres in height over time.
