The Acer palmatum ‘Aoyagi’ is a striking green-barked Japanese Maple admired for its luminous foliage and exceptional winter interest. The name ‘Aoyagi’ translates to “green coral”, a reference to its vibrant chartreuse green bark that remains a standout feature throughout the colder months.

In spring and summer, bright chartreuse green leaves glow against the equally vivid green stems, creating a fresh and uplifting presence in the garden. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into brilliant neon yellow, providing a dramatic contrast against the chartreuse bark. Even after leaf drop, the colourful stems continue to add structure and brightness to the winter landscape.

‘Aoyagi’ is particularly effective when planted alongside coral bark or yellow-barked varieties, where its green stems create a unique and dynamic colour contrast.

Care Information:

Climate Adaptability: Thrives in temperate climates and performs well in most South African regions with moderate conditions.

Sun Exposure: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade. While tolerant of sun, protection from extreme heat will preserve foliage quality.

Watering: Maintain consistently moist but well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogging to ensure healthy root development.

Soil Type: Prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter for sustained healthy growth.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light structural shaping during winter dormancy will maintain its upright form and highlight bark colour.

Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy foliage and strong seasonal performance.

Mature Size: Reaches approximately 3.5 metres in height within 15 years with an upright growth habit.
